WHAT IS CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)?
Very often, the way we behave is influenced and sometimes even controlled by the way we think. In turn, the way we think has been influenced by other experiences,at other times in our lives. As a result, we often react instinctively to something that happens, or something somebody says.
CBT is the means by which we retain, and if necessary REGAIN control of the way we think. And, once we can do this, we can take better decisions, and solve problems in a happier and more satisfying way.
HOW CAN CBT HELP ME?
Let's take feeling "stressed" as an example. Ever felt that you "just can't cope"? That life is getting on top of you? It's your job, the kids, your spouse, money, and perhaps a few other things as well?
In situations like this, it's so easy to react to the last thing that's happened. The point at which the chain just threatened to snap. The point at which you felt you were going to lose it!
CBT can help you solve these problems permanently, because it helps you unravel all these complexities in your head, AND ADDRESS THE CAUSE instead of THE EFFECT.
BUT WHAT DOES CBT ACTUALLY DO?
It helps us understand ourselves. It traces the way attitudes, assumptions, beliefs, and experiences can influence rational thought, and undermine our ability to reason with ourselves. Reason is replaced with rigidity which discourages moderation.
HOW CAN YOU HELP ME, RHIANNON?
In the first place, all we're going to do is chat. I will encourage you just to talk everything through with me. I'm a good listener, and as our discussion develops, I'll be able to trace patterns and links by paying attention to the way you talk, the way you behave with me. What I'll then do is retrace our steps to some of the points in our discussion, and ask you to help me a bit more with these. And finally, as a first part of our work together, we'll try to agree on the basic issues. Of course, that isn't the end of the story. But it does provide a basis for going forward.
SO, WHAT COMES NEXT?
We'll agree a simple action plan or strategy for you to follow, and a date for you to come back and see me. Most of my clients find that over a period of weeks or months, they can achieve significant results and
benefits which impact on their lives, friendships, families and effectiveness at work.
